Every HR analytics project is a data project first. Validating quality early saves the far greater cost of rebuilding trust after a dashboard produces numbers nobody believes.
The eight dimensions to validate
- Completeness: are required fields actually populated?
- Accuracy: do values reflect reality, and can they be verified?
- Consistency: do the same concepts use the same definitions everywhere?
- Uniqueness: is each employee represented once, with no duplicates?
- Validity: do values fall within permitted formats and ranges?
- Timeliness: is the data current enough for the decision at hand?
- Integrity: do relationships between records hold together?
- Accessibility: can the right people retrieve it securely and lawfully?
Build in checks, do not rely on heroics
Quality decays the moment a manual fix stops being repeated. Encode validation rules at the point of entry, schedule recurring audits, and assign clear ownership for each critical field.
Start with the fields that drive decisions
You do not need perfect data everywhere. Identify the handful of fields that underpin your priority use case, fix those first, and expand from there. Progress on the metrics that matter beats a stalled attempt at perfection.
